General Contractor in Westwood, MA

Westwood is about ten minutes from our shop in Norwood, which means we’re on your job at 7 a.m. without a highway between us and it.

It’s also a town where the work tends to be larger. Westwood homes carry higher values than most of Norfolk County, and homeowners here generally aren’t looking for the cheapest number. They’re looking for the person who will finish it properly and still be reachable afterward.

What Westwood projects look like

The housing runs from older center-of-town colonials to substantial post-war and newer construction spread across larger lots. Two patterns come up again and again.

Additions rather than moves. With Greater Boston prices where they are, adding on frequently costs less than buying the same square footage, and you keep the street, the schools and the commute. Westwood lots are generally big enough to make that a real option, which is not true everywhere in the county.

Kitchens that were already renovated once. A lot of Westwood kitchens got updated fifteen or twenty years ago and are now dated rather than broken. That’s a different job than a gut. You’re deciding what’s worth keeping, and a contractor who reflexively demos everything is spending your money for no reason.

Permits in Westwood, and why they catch people out

Westwood does permitting differently from its neighbors. Everything is online. The town states plainly that all permit applications must be submitted through ViewPoint Cloud. There is no walking in a paper application. You create an account through the town website and file there.

Budget thirty days. Westwood lists processing times of up to 30 days. That is not a delay, that’s the normal timeline, and any contractor who tells you a Westwood permit comes back in a week hasn’t pulled one recently. We build it into the schedule from the start.

The stretch energy code is live. Westwood adopted the 2023 Massachusetts Stretch Energy Code, which applies to applications filed after January 1, 2023, alongside the 2021 International Residential Code with Massachusetts amendments. The town specifically notes it greatly impacts how service calculations are made on new houses. In practice that shows up in insulation, air sealing and electrical service sizing, and it affects budget on additions in particular. Pricing a Westwood addition to an older energy standard produces a number that isn’t real.

Inspections go through the main office. The town asks that you call the Building Division rather than individual inspectors, at (781) 320-1091, 50 Carby Street. Office hours are Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
